LUCK IS IN FOR GARY’S BOYS

- By Chris Spittles

WYCOMBE pulled off a smash and grab raid as Randell Williams’ first EFL goal clinched an undeserved win at Yeovil.

Victory lifts the Chairboys closer to promotion to League One, extending their lead over fourth-placed Exeter City to four points.

But Wycombe rode their luck throughout the game, with Yeovil twice hitting the post through Otis Khan and Tom James and also having an Alex Fisher strike ruled out for offside.

Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “I told the Yeovil players after the game that they didn't deserve that, because there wasn’t much between the two teams.

“If anything, Yeovil had the lion’s share of the chances, but it’s all about sticking the ball in the goal and Randell Williams’ first goal of his career was a fantastic moment for him and an important moment for the club.

“Sometimes you don't get what you deserve in football and sometimes you get more than you deserve and that was us.

“We have to keep picking up points now because the promotion race is very tight and is going to go right to the wire.”

Yeovil lost a fourth home game in a row but manager Darren Way was encouraged by his team’s performance.

He said: “Football can sometimes be a cruel game and I think Wycombe only had one shot on target and ended up winning.

“We need the players to take belief from the way they played because even though we lost there were good aspects to our play.

“If anything we lacked an end product but the group are giving me absolutely everything and I can’t question their commitment of desire.

“We had a goal ruled out for offside as well and the lads tell me it should have stood but sometimes things don’t go your way.”

Yeovil edged a tight first half, with the Glovers creating the only two chances of note during the opening 45 minutes.

First Lewis Wing’s cross set up captain Omar Sowunmi, who headed just wide after outjumping Wycombe keeper Scott Brown.

And then just before halftime, Khan’s long-range free-kick beat Brown but hit the post and rebounded off to safety.

After the break the Glovers saw Fisher’s effort ruled out for offside after he converted a cross from Jordan Green from close range.

Nick Freeman then shot just wide for Wycombe before James hit the post again for Yeovil with another free-kick from distance.

But Wycombe’s winner arrived with 12 minutes left as a Yeovil clearance fell to Williams 20 yards out and the youngster found the bottom corner of the net with a leftfooted shot to clinch victory for the visiting side.
