Barry is back with a bang to bash Boro

- By Shane MacDermott

INTERIM Cambridge United boss Joe Dunne took his side back to school to beat fierce rivals Stevenage.

The gaffer studied his opposition and taught his squad how to prevail at the Lamex.

And they did just that as super-sub Barry Corr grabbed a second-half brace to secure a first double in the derby in a decade.

Dunne said: “We planned in the classroom all week for it, really. We’ve seen them four times and did our homework.

“We came here on a Tuesday night and did an evening session, and Stevenage are exceptionally hard-working, as they always have been.

“It was a really professional away performance.

“We felt like making the first half a nonevent. They’ve been exceptionally energetic and we wanted to take the game away from them.

“We looked at the second half and looked at the timings we could attack.

“We make no excuses for our first-half performance and you do what you’ve got to do. We spoke about when we fight, we fight, and when we play, we play.

“First half, we just wanted to see them out and then Barry came on and scored twice for us.”

Early on, Stevenage missed a great chance when Danny Newton’s header was saved by David Forde.

Down the other end, Tom King made a great one-on-one save to keep Billy Waters from opening the scoring.

On the stroke of halftime, Alex Revell squandered two chances at giving the Robins a lead and they were made to pay after the break by Corr’s brace.

It was a fitting finish as match-winner Corr was lauded by the travelling U’s fans.

It’s been a difficult couple of years for the forward, who scored his first goal since last February, in his 14 th appearance in two seasons.

Destiny arrived as he scored with his first touch, a header from George Maris’ free-kick while the second was a great team move from the visitors, with Corr converting Brad Halliday’s cut-back late on.

Disappointed Boro boss Dino Maamria conceded that his troops didn’t do enough to affect the contest and deserved to come away with nothing.

“It’s always disappointing when you lose a derby, but it is what it is,” he said.

“We tried our hardest and it just wasn’t good enough, in all honesty.

“We weren’t at our best and there are no excuses for that.

“It was just one of those days.”
