PAGE WRITES HIS OWN HEADLINES!

- By John Lyons

CHARLTON’S Lewis Page netted the first goal of his career with a spectacular strike against Plymouth – and now it’s won him an award!

The 21-year-old left-back kicked off Lee Bowyer’s reign in the Addicks’ hotseat in stunning style with a thirdminute, 20-yard volley. Charlton went on to run out 2-0 winners against the Pilgrims at The Valley.

Page earned 47 per cent of the public vote to beat Gillingham’s Lee Martin and Rochdale’s Steve Davies to the Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month honour. “It’s great to get the recognition up against some really strong opposition,” said Page.

“It was very early on in the game and was my first game back at home in a long time, so it was nice to start off with that.

“I brought it down and it just fell nicely so I just thought, ‘why not?’ and hit it. At first, I thought it was going over, but it just dipped underneath the bar.”

Cardiff’s fortunes have dipped a bit of late, but at least centre-back Sol Bamba has something to celebrate on a personal level.

The 33-year-old Ivory Coast international bagged the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month accolade for his sharp turn and powerful shot in the Bluebirds’ 3-1 victory at Brentford.

Thundered

“It’s always good to win this sort of award,” he said. “I think the touch was the difference, the touch to turn, and after that I just hit it as hard as I could and luckily enough it went in.”

Bamba claimed 41 per cent of the public vote to edge out Millwall’s Ben Marshall and Reading’s Sone Aluko.

Crewe’s Perry Ng made it a clean sweep for defenders by notching the League Two prize. He won the ball, strode forward and thundered home a left-footed strike in the 2-2 draw at Stevenage.

“I won the ball high up the pitch, cut inside and I had quite a lot of time, so I just thought I’d whack one,” said the 21year-old. “Luckily, I caught it well and it went top corner with my left foot. “I’ve been practising that a lot recently because the manager’s (David Artell) been telling me I come in quite a lot and cross it or shank it wide, so it’s good that hard work pays off.” With a 51 per cent vote share, Ng beat Cheltenham’s Harry Pell and Accrington’s Jordan Clark.
