LOWE BAN FAILS TO STOP BURY

- By Tristan O’Connell

BURY shrugged off the absence of their manager Ryan Lowe as they sealed victory against Morecambe. It was announced shortly before kick-off that Lowe had been handed a two-game stadium ban and £1,500 fine after he admitted an anti-doping misconduct charge.

Dominic Telford struck twice to earn Bury a first win since the opening day of the season.

They went in front after 29 minutes when Adam Thompson tapped home a rebound after Chris Stokes’ looping header had bounced down off the crossbar.

Morecambe replied nine minutes later with only their second goal of the season.

Rhys Oates tapped home from two yards after Bury keeper Joe Murphy could only parry Andrew Fleming’s shot into his path.

A minute before the break Bury re-took the lead when Danny Mayor crossed in for Dominic Telford, who coolly side-footed home.

Chris Dagnall almost made it 3-1 to Bury on the hour mark when he fired into the side-netting. Telford did grab Bury’s third four minutes from the end, side-footing home a measured low cross from Danns.

Morecambe then grabbed a second as Liam Mandeville curled home from 25 yards.

Asked about Lowe’s absence during what was only Bury’s second win of the campaign, assistant manager Rob Kelly said: “We’ve kept everything as normal as possible this week. All our preparations were the same.

“Ryan watched the game somewhere, but we weren’t allowed any contact. The only difference was that Ryan wasn’t in the dugout. He’s making his way in the game and he’ll learn from this.

“This result today has to be seen as another tiny step forward in what we’re trying to build here.”

Morecambe fell to a fifth defeat in six this term, but boss Jim Bentley remains positive as it’s not been the easiest of starts for his team.

Bentley said: “It’s another defeat, but don’t forget we’ve played all three teams who have just been relegated from League One, and we’ve run them all close. We asked a lot of questions of Bury, but when you look at their squad on paper, we are miles apart.

“We made it tough for them at times. We were on top in the opening 10 or 15 minutes, but you need to make that pay off. “I was disappointed to lose another setplay goal too, and we’re losing goals at crucial times in the game. “It was much better in the second half. I thought the substitutions worked and we created opportunities. “It’s been a difficult start to the season, but hopefully a win is just around the corner.”
