DARREN DAZZLED AS TOWN BAG SIX

- By Steffan Thomas

DARREN Way was a happy man after his Yeovil Town side thrashed Newport County at Rodney Parade.

A double from Jordan Green plus a goal each from Diallang Jaiyesimi, Yohan Arquin, Olufela Olomola and Carl Dickinson floored County.

Newport were poor throughout as they slipped to their first League Two defeat in six games.

“It was an unbelievable performance and proved the level of confidence that’s in the squad,” said Way.

“I’ve had many difficult moments at this ground. Tottenham came here last season and found it very difficult and Leeds lost here.

“I thought tactically our players ran all over them. I feel it’s all about goals and the quality of our goals in the second half was fantastic.

“Every player has put into action what we do on the training paddock. What we’ve got to do now is replicate this level of performance every Tuesday and Saturday.”

Newport manager Michael Flynn was distraught after his side’s heaviest loss of the season.

“We got hammered by a very good and efficient Yeovil side,” he said. “We did our preparation and we knew they would test us with their pace.

“It’s very frustrating because we knew what to expect but we played into their hands.

“They did exactly what we expected. I can’t put my finger on what happened.

“It was just a bad result and it’s vital we get a response next week. This is a reminder how brutal this league is and not to get carried away.

“We will be back working hard this week. Everything that could go wrong went wrong.

“I thought Yeovil were excellent. I thought they defended well and had a lot of pace up front.

“I don’t want to be one of these managers that never credits the opposition because we got beaten by a side who were far better than us on the day.”

Arquin put the visitors ahead when he drilled the ball into the bottom righthand corner after a well-timed pass from Jaiyesimi.

Green extended Yeovil’s lead when he scuffed a shot into the back of the net after Matty Dolan had messed up his clearance. Jaiyesimi capped an impressive first half for the visitors when his header beat Joe Day to give Yeovil a 3-0 half-time lead.

The Glovers began the second half as they had finished the first with Green drilling the ball past a helpless Day for their fourth.

Olomola grabbed their fifth with a stunning strike into the far left-hand corner before a speculative strike from Dickinson slipped through Day’s legs.

And the game ended on a sour note when Newport’s Matty Dolan received a red card for a two-footed challenge.
