DANIELS: WE’VE GOT FOOT TO PEDAL ON ABBEY
GRAHAM Daniels has reassured Cambridge fans that regular conversations are taking place about the Abbey Stadium redevelopment.
Talks of redevelopment of the Abbey have been constant since Paul Barry took effective ownership of the club in February.
Director of football Daniels said that although there is nothing formal to add at this point, Cambridge are “hopeful and optimistic” that there will be progress with the redevelopment of their home.
“Please rest assured that every week there’s a regular conversation of all significant parties about the development of the stadium and where things are in the plan,” he said.
“We’ve got some really, really good people across this city working together to try and get Cambridge United’s Abbey Stadium to a really fit for purpose state.
“There’s plenty of work going on and we’re not taking our foot off the pedal on this one.
“We’re optimistic and hopeful that we’re going to have a fantastic place at the Abbey,” he added.
Back in June, the club approached the Greater Cambridgeshire Partnership (GCP) to ask for assistance in the project, which would help to create homes and 25,000 square feet of retail space.
GCP officers asked the board for up to £50,000 to carry out the feasibility test, which is yet to be approved.
At the time, a spokesman for Cambridge said: “The club has been in detailed discussion with potential partners regarding the stadium redevelopment for some months.
“We obviously hope that this feasibility study will be approved by the GCP board and can help unlock the project.
“The club has consistently said over recent months that it sees a new stadium as vital to its long-term future.”
