PRIZE GUYS
West Brom and Doncaster at double in monthly EFL awards
IT WAS double delight for both West Brom and Doncaster in the Sky Bet EFL September awards – with Newport and Oldham sharing the honours in League Two. West Brom manager Darren Moore scooped the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month award after his side picked up 13 points from five games to go top, while striker Dwight Gayle landed the player prize after hitting five goals in five games for the Baggies. Moore, 44, in his first management job, said: “It means everything to win this, because it shows progression with the foot
ball club, it shows the club is heading in the right direction. I get to pick up this award but I share it with everybody: the staff, players, supporters.”
Great
Striker Gayle, 27, on a season-long loan from Newcastle, said: “It is a great achievement for myself and I am really pleased to receive an individual award, but I have got to thank my team-mates for it – they played a vital role.”
In League One, Doncaster manager Grant McCann and striker John Marquis bagged the prizes. Former Peterborough boss McCann earned the manager gong after Rovers earned 13 points from five games.
“It has been a good start, but we are not getting carried away,” said McCann. “We have got a lot of improving to do.”
Marquis, 26, added: “It has been a successful month for us as a team and myself – to score six goals in a month has been good. The manager has put a lot of confidence and belief into us to do well and keep doing what we believe are the right things.”
Confidence
In League Two, Newport County manager Michael Flynn was rewarded after his side collected 12 points
from a possible 15. Remarkably, the game they lost was a 6-0 hammering at home against Yeovil.
“All the credit has got to go to the players,” said Flynn. “That’s what we’re about; we all help each other out and we all work as hard as we can. One of the key things was how we bounced back after the bad result against Yeovil.”
Oldham striker Sam Surridge claimed the player award after hitting five goals in four games.
The 20-year-old Bournemouth loanee said: “Hopefully I can continue to keep scoring as well as helping the team pick up points.”
