The 150 up for Jones as Justin seals win

- By Mike Simmonds

NATHAN Jones was thrilled to mark his 150th game in charge of the Hatters with a victory.

Goals from Harry Cornick, Elliot Lee and James Justin saw Town triumph as Jones said: “I’m delighted to have won, to lead this club, it’s a great club for 150 games, and to get a win on that milestone is very good.

“It was even in terms of possession, but we had so many chances and I think 3-2 flattered them very much, as it could have had five or six.

“To be able to do that to a perennial play-off contender in League One, is very, very good and very pleasing.”

The Hatters had the lead after 10 minutes when Cornick beat the offside trap to slot past Jak Alnwick from a tight angle.

Iron levelled after 17 minutes as after Josh Morris was denied by keeper James Shea, Lee Novak on hand to beat the covering Sonny Bradley.

Town were back in front after 26 minutes when Lee fired in a left-footed scorcher from 20 yards.

In the second half, Luton looked to be safe with five minutes to go, Justin slamming home Jack Stacey’s low cross.

Stephen Humphrys pulled one back in stoppage time, but Luton held on to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

“I’m disappointed we conceded late on, because it made it a little bit more hairy than it should have been, but it would have been a travesty if we didn’t get anything other than three points,” said Jones.

“We had a real cutting edge, especially on the counter, and a little bit more composure in the final third and that would have been over a long time ago.”

Iron boss Stuart McCall, beaten for the first time since taking over on August 27, said: “That was as well as we’ve played away from home.

“But the first goal was criminal to concede. We knew how Luton were going to play – to get down the channels and get in behind – and it was a terrible goal to lose.

“Then we get control of the game and scored but their second goal was a very good goal. We were on top early in the second half and it looked like Luton were the away side.

“We can’t keep giving three goals away, but there were more positives to this display than when we beat Charlton 5-3 in midweek.”
