COME-BAK KING CRACKS ADDICKS

- By Martin Hogkison

CHARLTON boss Lee Bowyer read the riot act after they lost to a late double from Coventry’s Amadou Bakayoko.

After Lyle Taylor’s penalty had given the Addicks the advantage before halftime, it looked likely that the hosts would go on to win until substitute Bakayoko scored with 10 minutes remaining to level for Mark Robins’ men.

Bakayoko added a second in injury-time to seal a superb comeback for the Sky Blues and leave Bowyer furious.

“The goals conceded was laughable stuff,” said the 41year old. “It’s basic defending – that’s what frustrates me.

“If someone shoots and it goes in from 30 yards then fair enough, but I told our captain Jason Pearce that it wasn’t good enough. I called out the back-four in general. I said to them, I don’t care who you are, if you don’t do it right, it’s not good enough.”

Charlton had chances to claim the victory and Bowyer was frustrated with their inability to close out the match.

He said: “We can’t keep missing chances – it’s absolutely ridiculous. I can’t even think how or why it happens but in the last three games we have conceded poor goals.

“Maybe we’re taking our foot off the pedal and thinking we’re too good and it’s too easy. It can’t continue.”

Coventry boss Robins was delighted with the way his side came from behind.

“To stick in the game and then take our chances the way we did was fantastic for us and they are three really, really good points,” said the 48-yearold. “You could see everybody growing in confidence.

“In the first half, there was a clear difference between the two teams.

“But we get a lift with the pace and the strength of Bakayoko and Jordy Hiwula, who was brilliant when he came on, to seal us the win.

“To win the game against Charlton is a big step forward, but by no means did we run away with it.

“Some would argue that it was a bit of a smash and grab, and I will take that.”

The hosts started the game on the front foot and were unlucky not to be ahead after five minutes when Tariqe Fosu’s shot was superbly deflected over the bar by defender Jordan Willis.

Coventry came close to opening the scoring themselves but Conor Chaplin could only fire over the bar after 14 minutes.

The Addicks took the lead prior to the break when Taylor was brought down in the box by Junior Brown and converted from the spot.

Robins’ side levelled with a nicely worked move that saw Luke Thomas cross for Bakayoko to tapin from close range. Bakayoko was then on hand to deliver the killer blow in the dying seconds.
