Way glad to take a point off Grecians

- By Martin Mills

DARREN WAY was pleased to see his Yeovil side stop the rot after successive league defeats as they took a point off high-flying Exeter.

He may have wondered if it was going to be another defeat, though, when Jayden Stockley opened the scoring after just nine minutes.

But Olufela Olomola set up Jordan Green for a tap in and Olomola then set up Alex Fisher, before Stockley’s second of the game restored parity.

“The first 15 minutes we were on the front foot and then we made a mistake and were 1-0 down,” Way said.

“We regrouped in the second half and couldn’t have started any better. We have pace, power, forward momentum and we went 2-1 up with two well worked goals.

“Then they brought on [Jonathan] Forte and really that’s the difference. But I have to be pleased with that second-half performance.”

Exeter asserted their authority early on when Stockley headed in the opener. Hiram Boateng hung up the cross and goalkeeper Nathan Baxter failed to come out, allowing the striker to nod in. Yeovil were level just after the break and it came from another defensive mistake, this time when Luke Croll’s header back to Christy Pym was weak and Olomola pounced on it before rounding the keeper and laying it to Green to score easily.

In the 61st minute, it was 2-1 to the Glovers with Olomola the provider again, beating Croll for pace from a long ball forward before crossing for Fisher to score. Stockley had his eighth league goal and second of the day after 75 minutes when he found space in the box to head in a Dean Moxey cross and level the scores.

Despite Stockley rescuing a point, Grecians boss Matt Taylor could not hide the disappointment at how his team defended.

“It was frustrating the manner we let them back in the game,” Taylor said.

“We didn’t defend their first ball well enough throughout the afternoon. Certainly in the second half they kept getting in time and time again and they got their rewards.

“We’ve got to improve that side of our game.

“You don’t deserve to win a game if you defend like that.”
