HITMAN NORWOOD SHOCKS THE IMPS

-

THE division’s top scorer James Norwood popped up with the only goal of the game as Tranmere shocked table-topping Lincoln.

The 27-year-old produced a clinical 61st-minute finish for his eighth goal of a productive campaign. His night was marred, however, when he was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

It was only Lincoln’s second defeat.

Delighted Tranmere boss Micky Mellon said: “At half-time we knew what jobs needed to be done in order to make us more of a threat in the second half, going forward and nullifying Lincoln. It worked well and all credit to the players.”

Newport County missed the opportunity to move level with Lincoln when they were held to a 3-3 home draw by basement side Macclesfield.

Goals from Fiacre Kelleher and David Fitzpatrick (pen) gave Macclesfield a two-goal lead inside 11 minutes, but Dan Butler and Mickey Demetriou (pen) levelled things up.

Fitzpatrick notched his second spot-kick with eight minutes left to restore winless Macc’s lead, but the in-form Jamille Matt netted a 97th-minute equaliser to break Newport hearts.

Dean Moxey scored the only goal of the game as Exeter climbed to second with a 1-0 home win against Stevenage, while Frank Nouble scored twice as Colchester moved fourth with a 3-1 home win against faltering Yeovil.

Forest Green triumphed 3-1 at Cambridge to continue their unbeaten start and dump the U’s into the relegation zone, while Notts County beat Crawley 3-1 as Harry Kewell’s new side got the better of his old one.

Keith Curle’s Northampton reign began with a goalless home draw against Bury. OTHER RESULTS: Carlisle 0 Grimsby 1; Cheltenham 2 Morecambe 2; Crewe 1 Swindon 0; Mansfield 0 Oldham 0; Port Vale 0 MK Dons 2.
