JAMES’ JOY AS ROVERS SHINE ON RETURN

- By Max Chesterton

TRANMERE top-scorer James Norwood believes his side have surpassed all expectations on their return to League Two.

Micky Mellon’s men have made an early push for automatic promotion after rising from the National League last season and Norwood has been at the heart of it all.

And he says that his team have utilised their underdog tag to their advantage to climb up the league table.

He said: “We were one of the best teams in the league below. I spent a long time in that league and a lot of teams in League Two are from the National League.

“We have got players who are capable of playing at this level and the level above. They have got a chance to shine at this level and it is just about putting in the performances. We are used to just one position goes up, so to us, three looks massive when you look at the League Two table.”

Forward Norwood, 28, had netted eight goals so far this campaign ahead of this weekend’s fixtures after a sterling season in Non-League that saw him strike 20 times last campaign. He believes Rovers can continue to climb.

“We have played some very good teams so far but we are more than capable of holding our own and if you look at the vast majority of games, we have been on top, other than probably the first 45 minutes against Lincoln (a 1-0 win earlier this month),” said Norwood.

“In the National League, we were a bit notorious for not picking up points against the top five teams, so to know we have already played a lot of teams who are near the top of the division, and have got results against most of them, is very pleasing.”
