GILBEY’S QUICKLY GETTING BACK TO HIS BEST

- By Joe Leavey

ALEX Gilbey shouldn’t really be playing football at the moment.

The 23-year-old MK Dons midfielder went under the knife after suffering a serious knee injury in February and was expected to be out until the new year.

But against all odds, the former Wigan man was back in action by the start of the season and had featured in every League Two fixture so far this term ahead of yesterday’s game against Northampton.

And whilst the recovery is nothing short of remarkable, you’ll find noone more surprised than the man himself.

“I’m sort of lost for words over it all,” he said.

“I think I’m slowly starting to find my form, as it took me a few weeks to get going.

“At first, I was getting frustrated with myself as I wanted to come back at the level I expect myself to be at but it doesn’t work like that. I was out for sixand-a-half months and you can’t just come back and expect to be at the top of your game.

“It’s taken me a few weeks but I’m slowly starting to find my form and, hopefully, I’ll be putting in better performances as the season goes on.”

Paul Tisdale’s side have enjoyed a strong start to the new campaign, riding the crest of a five-match unbeaten run ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.

And Gilbey is relishing every minute of football that he has stolen back from the treatment table.

He added: “The atmosphere at the moment is unbelievably positive. I’ve never been in a dressing room where everyone gets on so well, and that’s down to the management staff and the players they’ve signed. We’ve shown that everyone is really in it for each other.”
