Craig’s just too sharp for the Iron

- By Matthew Hubbert

GARETH Ainsworth was full of praise for his Wycombe side after they came back from 2-0 down to snatch the points with a win over Scunthorpe.

He said: “After the first 10 minutes, the lads were absolutely superb.

“The first 10 minutes, I want to forget. I am going to have to have a look at it but it looked like we defended too deep and dropped off too much and we were shellshocked.

“Scunthorpe are a good side. They are a top 10 side, maybe the play-offs and for us to get that win, after being 2-0 down is phenomenal.

“That win was about character. I am so pleased for the boys

Scunthorpe started the game in lightning fashion with two goals in the opening seven minutes as they threatened to run riot.

Ryan Colclough scored after just 18 seconds, cutting in from the left and firing past a stranded Ryan Allsop.

Stephen Humphrys made it 2-0 in quick time, clinically slotting past Allsop.

However, Dominic Gape gave Wycombe hope with an outstanding finish in the 26th minute to reduce the arrears. It looked like Wycombe would settle for a valiant point as Fred Onyedinma curled home a beauty from 20 yards after 53 minutes to make it 2-2 following wonderful hold-up play by Adebayo Akinfenwa.

Allsop was sent off with 10 minutes to go after being shown a straight red for a foul on Ike Ugbo before Craig Mackail -Smith’s winner

Mackail-Smith punished a mistake from defender Rory McArdle, racing clear before finishing expertly past Jak Alnwick.

Scunthorpe boss McCall said: “It is very hard to take.

“We saw yet again, the good and bad of Scunthorpe United. We can’t keep conceding three goals but I keep on saying it.

“We go 2-0 up with counter-attacking football and we know what Wycombe are about.

“Whatever anyone says about Akinfenwa, he is a huge handful at this level.

“They have scored two really good goals, but second half we were loose in possession and we don’t take care enough of the ball.

“We lost a game that we should have got a point from.”
