Robins rely on young guns to stun York

PHIL BROWN felt Swindon deserved their place in the second round of the FA Cup after beating Non-League York at the County Ground.

Brown said: “The job was done in the end. I didn’t foresee their goal, I thought we were in control of the game and I thought in the second half we were as well.

“But at 1-1, nonleague side or not, you’ve got something to hold onto and they were probably hoping for a replay.

“We created six clear-cut chances in the first half and nine in the second half, so to say we deserved it would be an understatement.

“They gave us a game but I’m looking at a younger group and thinking to myself they did all right on this occasion.”

Swindon had the better of the first half and should have had more than Scott Twine’s 12th-minute goal to show for their dominance.

Twine’s first goal for his hometown club had a hint of cheekiness about it as Jermaine McGlashan cut a cross back from the byline and the 19-year-old backheeled the ball off a post and into the net.

York equalised two minutes before half time when David Ferguson scrambled home from six yards after Lawrence Vigouroux had saved an initial header.

Elijah Adebayo wasted a golden chance to put Swindon back in front in the 68th minute after James Dunne’s pass sent him clear, but the on-loan striker’s weak shot was saved by York goalkeeper Adam Bartlett

The tie looked to be heading for a replay until Alzate bagged the winner in the 76th minute with a close range shot after Keshi Anderson had crossed.

York manager Sam Collins was unhappy with his team’s defending.

Collins said: “We had a slow start but got to grips with their formation and started to play some really good football. “We had two or three good situations, including the goal. We were thinking if we can get a goal it will give us something to hang on to.

“The thing I’m disappointed about is their two goals.

“I’m sure the fans are pleased in what they saw in terms of attitude and commitment and lads who want to run and work hard.

“That’s how we have to be. We can’t just raise it to those levels when it’s the FA Cup.”
