SHAKERS HAVE THAT LITTLE BIT MOORE

-

BURY cruised into the second round as they saw off the National League’s bottom side Dover Athletic.

In the first ever meeting between the two sides, Bury had far too much class for an Athletic outfit who are 38 places below them in the pyramid.

The hosts broke the deadlock after 12 minutes. Callum McFadzean’s cross from the left deflected kindly into Jay O’Shea’s path, and the midfielder calmly slotted home from 10 yards.

Danny Mayor scored a wonderful goal to double the lead soon after, gliding past two Dover challenges before beating Mitch Walker from just inside the box.

It was 3-0 when Byron Moore tucked home underneath Walker’s body after latching on to Nicky Maynard’s smart pass.

Soon after the restart, Bury skipper Neil Danns missed a clear opportunity as he failed to punish Moussa Diarra’s poor clearing header.

But Moore made it 4-0 in the 64th minute, hooking home Danns’ cross from close range.

Sub Dominic Telford made it five in stoppage-time with a composed finish.

Bury boss Ryan Lowe saluted the professionalism shown by his players and added: “I’m just happy to be in the hat to be honest.

“I believe there’s been a few upsets, I’m just glad we’ve not been on the wrong end of one of them.

“The lads have done their jobs brilliantly. They were respectful of the opposition, they stuck to the game-plan, and in the end they’ve come away with a handsome reward.

“It’s all about us, though, and I’m only concerned with what we’re doing.

“We’re a good outfit when we’re in that kind of mood. “We’ve got goals in us, we’ve got good passing movement, and the quality of some of our goals is really high.

“It wasn’t going to be easy for us, we knew that.

“Fair play to Dover, we knew they wouldn’t be coming here to roll over. We’ve just got everything right.

“Everything we’ve worked on in training seems to have paid off, and that includes preparing for the threat of Dover and their big lads.

“I’m really pleased with a clean sheet, too.

“The defenders have been strong lately and that’s good for their confidence.”

It proved to be a day to forget for Dover manager Andy Hessenthaler.

“Losing the two goals early on was a bit of a killer for us,” he said.

“We gave ourselves too much of a mountain to climb, and against a good side like Bury you just can’t do that.

“If we’d gone 1-0 up in the opening minutes, things might have been different, but it wasn’t to be.”
