Dickie the saviour as Robinson thinks big

- By Ross Reid

KARL Robinson is keeping his fingers crossed for a big FA Cup third round tie after his Oxford team won at League One rivals Plymouth.

The Liverpool-born boss admits he is looking forward to tomorrow’s draw, saying: “We don’t really mind who we get. It would be great to get Liverpool or one of the big four.”

United were in control when James Henry smashed home from close range in the 49th minute after being teed up by striker Jamie Mackie, a former Argyle player.

Then Cameron Brannagan doubled their advantage with a thumping strike from the edge of the box that beat 6ft 7in Matt Macey in the Argyle goal.

But the home side took the game to the wire when Antoni Sarcevic turned in Graham Carey’s pacy cross from the left in the 67th minute.

That set up a cracking finish in which late substitute Ruben Lameiras saw his stoppage-time drive come back off a post.

Robinson admitted: “It is not nice when you are stood on that touchline in the final minutes.

“We showed a naivety to some of the things that we did, but I am so pleased for the players in the way that they saw the game out.

“It’s a win and we are in the next round of the Cup.

“The fans create a wonderful atmosphere and it was a difficult place to play. It was the first big result this team has produced away from home. Not performance, result.”

Earlier, Argyle skipper David Fox had a thumping, bouncing shot cleared off the line by United defender Rob Dickie. Dickie also denied Fox again at 2-1, with a header to keep out another goalbound shot.

Plymouth had the better of the first half, but Argyle boss Derek Adams was left to rue missed chances when Oxford started the second half on the front foot. Adams said: “We were the better team, we had double the chances that Oxford had and they are obviously very fortunate to go through to the next round.

“We needed to take our chances.

“Over the 90 minutes we have just lost the two goals, which were poor from our point of view.

“We really needed to score in the first half.

“It’s a cup tie and always getting the first goal is going to be beneficial.”
