POSH MAY NEED TO GIVE THEIR MODEL A TWEAK...
DARRAGH MacAnthony was a huge fan of Steve Evans, so much that he even paid compensation to bring him to Peterborough.
So to see him sacked after just 11 months later came as a big surprise. The Scot has struggled for consistency. The Posh won five out of five in August but haven’t managed back-toback victories since. It’s been a constant pattern of win-drawloss. Now it’s one win in seven.
But when you consider that Steve turned over 18 players in the summer, maybe that shouldn’t be a surprise.
Peterborough is a club stuck on a treadmill to a certain extent. They are expected to be up there challenging for promotion to the Championship. Yet their business model relies on repeatedly selling their star players. It’s a difficult balance, and Steve isn’t the first manager to struggle.
You can’t argue with the club’s philosophy, or Darragh’s success as a businessman. I think Peterborough are the best club in the EFL for dipping into Non-League and giving chances to young English players.
They rotate their squad very, very well, consistently sign good players and make a lot of money.
But every club needs a season where you say ‘OK, let’s keep this core for one more year’.
It’s the only way you can get the kind of consistency that eluded Steve.
