BARNSLEY head coach Daniel Stendel felt his side could have scored more as they stretched their unbeaten run in League One to 10 games with a win against Scunthorpe.

Alex Mowatt and Cameron McGeehan scored to clinch the win for the Tykes.

Stendel said: “We played our game very well. In the second half I think we can score more than the two goals, but we can save the goals for the next match.

“In the five minutes before half-time we were not 100 per cent concentrated, but the other 85 minutes we were the better team. We played good in front of goal and created a lot of chances.

“We spoke before this game that we wanted to work more against the ball, like the last games and I think the players did that.

“His performance was so good today (Mowatt), at the moment he and Cameron McGeehan in the centre of midfield are playing so good.

“They worked very hard against the ball, created a lot of chances and I’m very happy with such players in our team.”

Barnsley took the lead in dramatic fashion 16 minutes in. Adam Hammill was taken down inside the box by Mamadou Thiam. But Scunthorpe’s penalty appeal was turned down and Barnsley countered and Mowatt found the net from 40 yards with keeper Jak Alnwick short sighted by the sun.

Four minutes before half-time Barnsley doubled their advantage. Thiam’s long-range shot took a deflection and looped onto the head of McGeehan, who guided the ball past Alnwick.

In first-half stoppage time Scunthorpe created their best chance as Lee Novak met a low cross well, forcing Adam Davies into a smart save at point close range.

Scunthorpe manager Stuart McCall said: “We’ve been beaten by a good, good side today, the better side on the day. But decisions change games.

“I wasn’t overwhelmed with how we started because we wanted to be better in possession.

“It’s a a penalty kick, the boy took Hammill out, everyone saw that. Ten seconds later, the lad’s hit a screamer from 40 yards.

“Any other day it would’ve been food and drink for Jak (Alnwick), but because of the sun, it’s swerved and he’s just not seen it.”
