The Football League Paper

Do it right, EFL, but do it quick, too

-

MOST people would agree this has been a very entertaining season so far.

A bunch of clubs have been in promotion contention all season in the Championship, Luton have come with an incredible run to top League One, Lincoln lead the way in League Two, Notts County are scrapping for their EFL lives.

There have been a number of incredible matches, including the 5-5 draw between Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, and Birmingham’s 4-3 victory at QPR. Just yesterday, Southend fought back from 3-0 down to earn a draw at home against Portsmouth.

If you’re looking for drama, then the EFL is the place to be. However, there are a few flies in the ointment that could put a dampener on things.

Our resident expect Chris Dunlavy gives us his take on the Birmingham City Financial Fair Play situation on the page opposite. We wait to see if the Blues will be deducted points.

Then there is the EFL investigation into ‘Spygate’ – the revelations that Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa had someone snoop on their Championship rivals in training. Last week the EFL stated that ‘there remain a number of areas that require further exploration and clarification and these investigations will take place at the earliest opportunity’.

We wait to see if Leeds will be deducted points.

And in the past week it was announced that Blackpool had been put into receivership at the High Court. The Seasiders could face a 12-point deduction from the EFL for becoming subject to an insolvency event.

EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey has said the matter will be considered by the EFL board at the earliest opportunity, a board meeting on March 6.

Of course, these matters must be investigated and dealt with properly, but we would also urge the EFL to try to do this as speedily as possible.

That’s only fair to those three clubs mentioned, but also all their rivals. Fans also deserve to know exactly where their club stands heading into the business end of the season.

That way, we can look forward to a dramatic finish to the season to match the opening chapters. If not, we could end up with chaos – and no-one wants that.
