DIVING GAYLE BANNED FOR TWO GAMES
DWIGHT Gayle has been handed a two-match retrospective ban by the Football Association after accepting a charge for diving in West Brom’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.
The 28-year-old Baggies striker was hit with the charge after going down in the penalty area under pressure from Alexander Milosevic and Yohan Benalouane in the 89th minute of Tuesday’s Championship clash at The Hawthorns.
Jay Rodriguez duly equalised from the penalty spot to rescue a point for the hosts.
A Stefan Johansen own goal gave Forest an early lead and, after Jacob Murphy equalised, Ryan Yates put the visitors ahead again before the late drama involving Gayle.
An FA statement read: “Dwight Gayle will serve a two-match suspension with immediate effect after accepting a charge for ‘successful deception of a match official’.”
Gayle missed yesterday’s game against Aston Villa and will also sit out Tuesday’s trip to QPR.
West Brom said in a statement: “The club supports Dwight’s view that he was attempting to avoid anticipated challenges in the 89th-minute incident which led to a penalty award for Albion.
“Although disappointed with the outcome, Albion have concluded any appeal would be fruitless.”
Last season Omar Niasse was banned for two games for diving after winning a penalty for Everton against Crystal Palace.
