150-UP BANNAN STILL AS HUNGRY AS EVER

- By Steve Coombs

MIDFIELDER Barry Bannan has his sights set on chalking up plenty more games for Sheffield Wednesday after his 150th appearance.

Scotland international Bannan was made captain of the Owls for the trip to Millwall on February 12 to mark the occasion.

The 29-year-old started his career at Aston Villa, with loan spells at Derby, Blackpool and Leeds before a permanent switch to Crystal Palace during the summer of 2013.

Following his time in the Premier League with the Eagles, which also saw a brief stint at Bolton, Bannan made the move to Hillsborough in August 2015.

Bannan’s industry helped Carlos Carvalhal’s men reach the 2016 Championship play-off final against Hull when they were beaten 1-0 at Wembley.

Another top-six finish saw the Owls make the play-offs again the following season, but Bannan and his team-mates would suffer the heartbreak of a semi-final defeat to Huddersfield on penalties.

The last campaign saw Bannan sidelined for three months because of injury, but he still featured in 31 games.

Wednesday battled to a goalless draw against Millwall, where Bannan collected a 13th yellow card of the campaign.

The combative midfielder is hoping to be able to carry on in the Owls’ cause for a few more seasons yet, having agreed a new three-year contract.

“I would like to thank everyone for the lovely messages,” Bannan said having reached his appearance landmark.

“It’s an honour to have played and captained this amazing club.”

New Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce is looking to finish the season with a flourish. “Every manager is different. He’s brought in new ideas, so it’s just getting used to that,” Bannan said.
