STENDEL SALUTES HOTSHOT CAULEY

- By Craig Scotter

BARNSLEY head coach Daniel Stendel hailed a “very good three points” for his side after they beat 10-man Wycombe, with Cauley Woodrow scoring both goals.

Woodrow opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 13 minutes, before doubling his and the Tykes’ tally just after the hour mark.

Wycombe reduced the deficit late on via Joe Jacobson’s late penalty, with away skipper Adam El-Abd seeing red.

Stendel said: “It was a very good three points, especially following the draw for Sunderland and Portsmouth. It was difficult, but we won.

“I said before the game to the players that we wanted to play attacking all the time and we had chances to win. We tried to score in every situation, but we have not been at our best today. We seemed to be a bit tired.

“I’m happy about his (Cauley Woodrow’s) performance, especially after the head injury for Kieffer Moore. We need his goals and he takes that responsibility. He played well and he’s a leader.

“It is important that we win our games, then it doesn’t matter what other teams do.”

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “They were a good side and they have got some Championship players in their team.

“On the whole, they probably edged it and the result says that. They had some good chances on our goal and ours were few and far between.

“We’ve given a real good account of ourselves and I think, at the end of the game, the Barnsley fans wanted the final whistle a lot more than the Wycombe supporters, which is a good sign.

“I thought we started the game well, but it was a sloppy goal to concede. Luke (Bolton) is devastated with that. He says he got a toe on the ball and the boy’s gone over his foot. That’s how it goes sometimes.

“You’ve got to give credit to Barnsley. I think Daniel has set his team up with respect to us today. The way they played, they were really on it and they deserved their win.”

Woodrow scored the opener from the spot after Luke Bolton was penalised for his foul on Mike Bahre. Wycombe went close to equalising when Nick Freeman’s shot forced a save from Adam Davies, while Alex Mowatt wasted a good chance for the hosts. Ryan Hedges and Jacob Brown combined to set up a second goal for Woodrow after 64 minutes, who fired high into the net. Wycombe skipper El-Abd was sent off deep into stoppage time following an offthe-ball incident involving Cameron McGeehan. Jacobson scored a consolation penalty in injury time after Ethan Pinnock fouled Scott Kashket, but there was no time for a comeback.
