Loan star Campbell delights Ricketts

- By Stuart Dunn

SAM RICKETTS was pleased to see Tyrese Campbell, the striker he recently signed on loan from Stoke City, score his first goal for Shrewsbury in their draw at home to Burton.

Campbell, on target twice for Stoke when Shrewsbury beat the Championship club 3-2 in an FA Cup replay last month, produced a cool finish to give the hosts an eighth-minute lead.

But Burton quickly pulled level through David Templeton’s header to leave the points shared, a result that means Shrewsbury, without a League One win since December 22, remain in the relegation zone.

“He took it really well,” said Ricketts, of Campbell’s opening goal.

“It’s not an easy chance when you go through one on one, especially when the pitch was as bobbly as that, but he finished really calmly, so I was really pleased for him.

“Tyrese is obviously new into the building, gradually settling in. He started a couple of weeks ago, didn’t start last weekend and then he’s worked hard this week and got his rewards.

“It’s a point, it’s another game unbeaten.”

Burton manager Nigel Clough bemoaned the conditions and the quality of the match. He said: “It’s another point on the road in very difficult conditions. The conditions dictated what sort of game it was.

“It was scrappy and I lost count of the number of times people miscontrolled it, overran the ball, misplaced passes. It was a very difficult surface to play on and a bit breezy as well.”

Shrewsbury raced into an eighth-minute lead when a pass forward from defender Ro-Shaun Williams ran to Campbell and the striker produced a cool finish to slot the ball past advancing Bradley Collins.

But Burton were quickly back on level terms when Stephen Quinn’s cross from the left was headed home by Templeton for an 11th-minute equaliser.

Shaun Whalley was then denied by the legs of keeper Collins before Marcus Harness was just off target for Burton at the other end.

James Bolton went close with a header for Shrewsbury early in the second half. Kyle McFadzean did the same for Burton, before Lucas Akins fired just wide for the visitors as the points were shared.
