CHUKS IS KEY AS MK CLIMB THE LADDER

-

CHUKS Aneke popped up with an 88th-minute winner as MK Dons triumphed at Newport County to climb to fourth. The Dons started the game outside the play-off positions, but jumped four places thanks to their hard-fought win in south Wales. FA Cup heroes Newport were made to pay the price for failing to take their chances as the visitors staged a smashand-grab. Substitute Aneke gobbled up the rebound after Exiles keeper Joe Day had saved from Jake Hesketh. Relieved MK boss Paul Tisdale said: “As much as Newport gave us a going over, we had to defend, we kept going and we made some positive changes to win it - I’m delighted.” A couple of other promotion challengers suffered setbacks. Carlisle went down 2-1 at Crewe, while Forest Green lost 2-0 at Swindon. Chris Porter tucked home to give Crewe a third-minute lead against Carlisle and the visitors were deeper in the mire on 18 minutes when Jamie Devitt was sent off for kicked out at the grounded Perry Ng. Gary Miller fired home to bring the ten men level just before the half-hour, but substitute Shaun Miller slid home the winner against his former club on 73 minutes. Swindon climbed to tenth and moved within five points of the play-offs with their victory against Forest Green. Kaiyne Woolery set the Robins on their way when he thumped home on 36 minutes and they extended their lead a minute before the interval when Southend loanee Theo Robinson cut in and slotted home on his home debut. Paul Scholes’ reign as Oldham manager began with a thumping 4-1 win against Yeovil. Jose Baxter, Callum Lang, Mohammed Maouche and Christopher Missilou netted.
