NOTTS TANGLED UP BY EXILES

-

NOTTS County’s hopes of hauling themselves off the bottom of the table were thwarted as they were hammered 4-1 at home by

Newport County on Tuesday night.

The Magpies went into the game on the back of a three-game unbeaten run, but they were put to the sword by the Exiles.

Fraser Franks fired Newport ahead on nine minutes, but Notts drew level through Kane Hemmings the following minute. Then it was the turn of Jamille Matt to take centre-stage – he headed home on 15 minutes and produced a brilliant bicycle kick second in the 33rd minute.

Any hopes Notts had of getting back into the game in the second half were dashed when Padraig Amond headed home his 20th goal of the season on 47 minutes.

Elsewhere, Paul Scholes suffered his first defeat in EFL management as his

Oldham side went down to a surprise 2-1 home defeat against Morecambe.

The visitors took a fourth-minute lead courtesy of Jordan Cranston, but it looked as though the Latics were back in business when Jose Baxter headed home on 76 minutes.

However, Shrimps substitute Aaron Collins slotted home in the last minute to earn the visitors a precious three points.

League Two’s top scorer James Norwood was at it again as Tranmere boosted their play-off chances with a 2-1 victory at struggling Port Vale.

Norwood made it 22 league goals with efforts on ten and 56 minutes and Vale could only muster a Ben Whitfield (59 minutes) effort in reply.

Cheltenham ran out 2-0 victors against Cambridge. George Taft’s 23rd minute own goal gave the hosts the lead and they were fully in control on 58 minutes. Cambridge’s Jake Carroll was sent off for handling Rakish Bingham’s effort on the goalline and Conor Thomas scored from the spot. Billy Waters later missed a second penalty for the Robins.
