ZAK’S SO EXCITED TO PLAY ROLE FOR SCHOLES

- By Dan Barnes

EVERY day is a ‘pinch yourself’ moment for Zak Dearnley as he hones his craft under Manchester United icon Paul Scholes at Oldham.

The 20-year-old forward is on loan at Boundary Park from Old Trafford, having marked his professional debut with his first senior goal against Crawley in February.

Scholes stepped into the Oldham hotseat two days after Dearnley’s bow and the Sheffield-born youngster is keen to make the most of his time under the tutelage of a United hero.

“It’s a very exciting time for me personally, coming from Manchester United,” said the Latics man, who extended his contract with United last summer.

“We all know the gaffer is a legend there, and there is no-one better to learn from in my eyes.

“I already had a great relationship with him, so I’m hoping to just build on that during my time at Oldham. He’s been there and done it, so any advice he gives me, I’ll be taking on board.

“He’s helped me every step of the way, and he’s put trust in me.”

Having featured predominantly for Ricky Sbragia’s United Under-23 side up until his January loan move to Oldham, Dearnley says the realities of competitive senior football has hit home.

Before yesterday’s clash with Stevenage, he had made five appearances in the space of 14 days, making for a breakneck introduction to first-team action.

“It’s been tough because I’m not used to playing so many games but, all in all, it’s been really good,” said Dearnley.

“There are points up for grabs and you know you have to fight for the fans who come and watch you in their numbers.

“They’ve spent their hard-earned money on coming to watch you play.”
