GETHIN’S MAKING STRIDES WITH THE STAGS...

- By Andy Baber

MANSFIELD already feels like a home from home for Gethin Jones – despite the wing-back only arriving at the club on loan from Fleetwood in January.

The 23-year-old joined the Cod Army from Everton towards the end of the January transfer window in 2018 but has only featured three times for the League One outfit.

The Australian-born former Wales Under-21 international made the switch to Mansfield towards the back end of this year’s transfer window and with the Stags riding high near the top of League Two, Jones admits the move has been an easy one.

“I’ve settled in really well,” said Jones, who signed until the end of the season.

“I know all the players now. They’ve been really welcoming and the staff have been good with me too.

“I moved up here to stay three or four times a week in the house with Ryan Sweeney – he’s good as well.

“I’ve walked into a really good environment. All the lads are buzzing with how they’ve played this season and it’s something that I’ve thrived off.”

Jones is also full of praise for Stags boss David Flitcroft.

“He has helped me a lot with different aspects,” Jones said. “Getting up the pitch is not something I’ve been used to in the past but I’m getting more used to it with training.

“Working hard on the training pitch means it’ll come off on Saturdays too. I played there a few times when I was with Everton, but the last two years had mainly been as a right-back.

“I know how to play the position and the gaffer’s been helping me on how to play it the best kind of way.

“Playing as a right wing-back is something I like to do so I can drive forward with the ball.”
