BEN’S SO HUNGRY TO GRAB CHANCE TO PLAY

- By Dan Barnes

THE challenge may be fierce with Colchester chasing down a League Two play-off spot but Ben Stevenson is ready to stand up and be counted.

The 21-year-old, who joined John McGreal’s side in the January transfer window from Wolves, has been forced to play a leading role in the Colchester midfield in recent weeks with the likes of Harry Pell, Brandon Comley and Tom Lapslie currently ruled out.

Stevenson was in line for only his 40th EFL appearance in yesterday’s clash with Newport but the former Coventry youngster isn’t letting the pressure get to him.

“I’ve gone from probably being one of the least experienced midfielders compared to Harry Pell and Tom Lapslie to one of the most experienced,” said Stevenson, who also spent the second half of last season on loan at the JobServe Community Stadium when still a Wolves player.

“It’s been unfortunate really but that’s what happens in football and we have to deal with it and cope with it.

“We obviously want everyone to come back as quickly as possible to increase competition – that will only be good for the team.

“Every game you play, you get more experienced and it gives you more confidence.

“I’m happy to be playing and being in the team and I need to make sure I keep my foot on the gas.

“The main thing for me when I came here was to play games and impress the manager. He allows me to play the game I want to play and how I’ve grown up playing.”

As far as his injured midfield trio are concerned, McGreal has confirmed that Lapslie, 23, has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring problem and isn’t expected to be back in action until the end of March at least.
