FERGIE’S FAITH IS BOOSTER FOR ACE GODDEN

- By Dan Barnes

PETERBOROUGH hitman Matt Godden says that the proverbial arm around the shoulder from Darren Ferguson has helped him rediscover his confidence.

Having plundered 13 goals in his first 20 games this season, things soon went south for the 27-year-old striker under Steve Evans’ wing, and he found the net just once in 19 games.

But just over a week ago, Godden returned to form with a brace against Wycombe and is now looking to finish the current campaign with a flourish, having got his mojo back.

“I can’t hide away from the fact that I had a great start and quietened down but now it’s about getting confidence,” said the former Stevenage man.

“My confidence took a little hit under the previous manager but that’s for me to pick myself up – and the gaffer here has picked me up.

“He told me that he believes I’m a good player and I’m delighted to get the two goals. Hopefully, I’ll go on another run like the start of the season.

“A bit of weight has been lifted from my shoulders, you could say.

“All my family know that I’ve been down, but that’s football – there are so many highs and so many lows. It’s just about dealing with them as they come.”

And having helped his man rediscover his scoring touch, Posh boss Ferguson is hoping Godden is back to his best.

“As a striker, he hadn’t scored for a while but we kept the belief,” said the Peterborough manager.

“I kept having chats with him and I had a feeling he might get a goal – and he proved that with two goals in 10 minutes.

“He has got very good movement and the players behind him know that, so I was delighted for the boy because he needed that bit of a lift.

“He’s got a smile on his face now.”
