VETERAN BARRY HAS STILL NOT HAD HIS FULL

- By Kumail Jaffer

BARRY Fuller has always been a fan favourite at Gillingham – and he’s eager to extend his stay at Priestfield.

Despite being out of contract this summer, the defender is desperate to end his playing days at the Gills.

A regular this season, his 33 showings means the 34-year-old is approaching a double century of appearances for the club.

And it’s clear that the veteran right-back wants to bring up that landmark in the next campaign.

Fuller said: “I’d like to finish my career here.

“It’s something I’ll probably sit down with the gaffer and the chairman and talk about towards the end of the season.

“Obviously our priority at the minute is to secure League One football and then after that we can sit down, sort something out and hopefully I can sign a new deal that could potentially finish my career here.”

There are no worries about his fitness, either – Fuller has been a mainstay for every club he has played for and is on course to rack up over 40 starts in five of his last six campaigns.

Fuller rejoined Gillingham after leaving in 2012 to join Barnet and then AFC Wimbledon, before returning to the club he originally joined as a 24-year-old last summer.

“I want to carry on until my legs can’t take it any more,” he said.

“In your head you try not to have a certain age because it might start telling your body and you start shutting down.

“Theoretically, I would like to say two more seasons of really pushing to play week in, week out but I haven’t got a set date.

“It’s when the legs don’t allow me to do the job to the best of my ability.

“At this moment in time I feel fit, strong and I feel like I can compete and do my job.”
