DETERMINED DINO

Dino Maamria on his new challenge at Oldham Athletic

- By John Lyons

UPBEAT boss Dino Maamria is convinced he can bring stability to Oldham after making a speedy return to the managerial ranks.

It’s only a couple of weeks ago that the 48-year-old Tunisian was sacked by fellow League Two outfit Stevenage after a disappointing start to the season.

However, when Oldham decided to call time on Frenchman Laurent Banide’s short reign on Thursday, they swiftly plumped for Maamria to turn their fortunes around.

Heading into his first game in charge, yesterday’s home clash with Morecambe, the Latics were 21st in the table with just one win from their opening nine games.

Former Stevenage and Doncaster striker Maamria, who has signed a two-year deal, told The

FLP: “It’s been a hectic couple of days, but I’m delighted to join such a great, traditional club in the north-west. I spoke to the chairman (Abdallah Lemsagam) in detail about the plans going forward and his ambition and vision appealed to me.

“He has invested heavily in the past two years and cleared a lot of debts, and now there’s a chance to stabilise the club. There has been a turnover of players, managers and coaches, but I think it’s time to stabilise the club and start winning matches.”

Maamria believes there is reason for optimism as Oldham attempt to climb the table.

“A first impression is that we have a very talented young squad,” he said. “Some aren’t used to the English game and need to adapt. I have been watching their previous games and they have been unfortunate not to win. They lack that belief to win matches and it’s my job to give them that belief and confidence to show what they are capable of.

“With a bit of organisation and togetherness, they are capable of doing something special.”

As for his Stevenage tenure, Maamria is proud of the job he did.

He added: “I’m delighted to return to management so quickly and that’s testament to the job I did at Stevenage last season. To get 70 points and miss the play-offs by a point with a low budget has been noticed by people. There was interest from three clubs after I left Stevenage.

“Stevenage gave me seven games this season, which I thought was harsh, especially as we had players out injured. I’m delighted to get straight back in and have the chance to show people what I can do. Hopefully I can achieve more with a club like Oldham.”
