HUTCH LAUDS MONK’S ARRIVAL AT OWLS

- By Jamie Holt

SHEFFIELD Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson believes the future is bright under new boss Garry Monk.

The Owls appointed the 40-year-old former Leeds, Swansea and Birmingham manager earlier this month to replace Steve Bruce.

Monk’s tenure began with an encouraging 2-0 win at Huddersfield but Hutchinson says Wednesday will only get better.

“We’ve only worked under him for a week and you can’t change everything in that time,” said the 30-year-old. “It’s only the start.

“The manager has come in and knows who we are, he wants to implement his philosophy and we’re doing really well with it at the moment.”

Hutchinson is also pleased with the way he has started the season, saying: “It’s probably been the best.

“I’m happy with what I’m doing, I’m as fit as I’ve been with the distances I’m covering. I feel good in my body and in my mind so I’m happy. It’s been really good. You see how organised we were against Huddersfield.”

Monk has moved quickly to tie down the future of Owls midfielder Alex Hunt, 19, who signed a new contract earlier in the week which will keep him at the club until 2021.

Hunt said: “I’m delighted, it’s my boyhood club. My dad was buzzing, it was his birthday when I got offered the new contract! It’s a massive thing for me, my younger brother and my family who are all Wednesdayites.

“To sign my first professional contract was good, but to get a new contract this early is a confidence boost for me to kick on.

“I came here at seven and signed my first pro deal when I was 17, it’s about getting near that first team now or going out on loan to develop my career.”

Hunt made his Wednesday debut against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup last season.
