COCU IS CHUFFED TO SEE SHINNIE EFFORTS
DERBY County boss Phillip Cocu has lauded the professionalism of midfielder Graeme Shinnie.
The 28-year-old Scotland international joined on a free transfer from Aberdeen in the summer, but had to wait until the victory over Luton Town before the international break to make his first league start.
Cocu revealed Shinnie asked for a meeting to see what he needed to work on and that attitude has paid dividends. “It is another example, for me, of another fantastic professional,” said Cocu.
“We spoke a little bit over two weeks ago. He came to me and not with excuses, he just asked me what he could improve and where did he have to step up to come into the team. We had a good talk and I said to keep on working hard. He has had to get used to the style of play and the different demands on how we like to execute.”
Shinnie delivered a man-of-the-match display against the Hatters and was delighted to take his chance. “I just wanted to go and see him and didn’t want him thinking that I was happy where I was at,” he added.
“I didn’t want to sit and relax, I just wanted him to know that I was eager to try to get out on the pitch and help the team.
“I kept my head down and worked as hard as I could and he gave me my opportunity, which I’m delighted with.
“I can’t believe it (is the international break). I am desperate for another game, even a midweek game. For me, the break is about working again.”
Meanwhile, former Aston Villa midfielder Birkir Bjarnason has confirmed he has held talks with both the Rams and Stoke City over a possible return to the Championship.
“They have been talking, but nothing has been finalised,” said the 31-year-old. “I’ve been talking to a team for a long time and it happens when it happens.”
