PILGRIMS POSTPONED OVER ROOF

- By Tom Blackett

PLYMOUTH Argyle were forced to call off yesterday’s game against Grimsby after high winds caused damage to the Home Park roof.

It was a bitter blow for Grimsby fans, who faced an almost 700-mile round trip to Devon to see the Mariners in action. The match was called off less than three hours before kick-off.

In a statement, Plymouth said: “Severe winds overnight have caused significant damage to the roof of Home Park, rendering parts of the ground unsafe for spectators.

“The continuing weather conditions, with winds gusting to gale-force at times, has made it impossible to safely access the roof to make repairs.

“With supporters’ safety of paramount concern, and following consultation with the police and safety experts, we have been advised that we are not allowed to open the stadium. Therefore, regrettably we have been left with no option but to call off the game.

“In keeping with the rest of Home Park, the roof was assessed during the summer and passed independent stringent safety and structural tests.

“We are content that the overnight damage was unavoidable.

“Details of the re-arranged fixture and associated ticketing information will be released as soon as we have them.

“Tickets for the match will be valid for the re-scheduled game; supporters who cannot make that fixture are entitled to a credit note for another League Two game this season.”

It was more frustration for Grimsby.

Their game at home to Cheltenham Town last Saturday was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
