Seasiders enjoy their feast of Shrimps...

- By Dave Wilson

SIMON GRAYSON insists his Blackpool side must do better, despite their thrashing of Morecambe.

Armand Gnanduillet, Nathan Delfouneso, Matty Virtue and Sullay Kaikai all scored for the hosts to crush the Shrimps’ hopes, who replied via Cole Stockton.

The Blackpool boss, whose players also beat Wolves Under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night, believes his team could have easily been punished on another day by a more clinical team.

“We want to be creative and expansive, but we just allowed Morecambe to hit us on the counter-attack and another team might have punished us,” he said.

“In the past two games, the opposition have hit the woodwork five times in total – we’ve got to make sure we’re not gifting opportunities as easily as we were.

“It was a tricky week – we had two potential big banana skins, but we’ve come through it with flying colours. We’re through to the next round, and that’s all we wanted when we started the game.”

Mark Halstead had already saved from Delfouneso and Gnanduillet when the former was on hand to head Blackpool in front after nine minutes, after Kaikai’s badly sliced effort. Mark Lavelle clattered the crossbar after 22 minutes, but Gnanduillet doubled Blackpool’s lead in the 24th – heading in from Kaikai’s corner.

Stockton was next to hit the woodwork, after his brilliant turn and volley hit a post in the 43rd minute.

Blackpool once again took full advantage – Virtue tapping in from close range two minutes later after Halstead denied Gnanduillet.

Stockton did pull one back on the stroke of half-time, however, following in after Jak Alnwick spilled Tom Brewitt’s shot. But Kaikai sealed Blackpool’s victory after 84 minutes with a delicate finish.

Morecambe joint-caretaker manager Barry Roche says there was little in the contest, despite the defeat.

“The performance wasn’t a bad one, but goals change games and we conceded poor goals, which killed us really,” he said.

“When they went 3-0 up, hat scoreline very much flattered them – we hit the crossbar at 1-0 and if that goes in then it’s a different game.

“It might sound stupid, but apart from the goals there wasn’t an awful lot in the game.”
