BYERS: GRITTY SWANS CAN DIG IN DEEP

- By Theo Joyce

GEORGE Byers says Swansea have developed a resilience under Steve Cooper that has contributed to their lofty league position.

The Swans sit fourth in the Championship following a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday in their final match before the international break.

Morgan Fox fired Wednesday in front in the first minute of second-half stoppage time before Ben Wilmot snatched a dramatic equaliser at Hillsborough.

Wednesday striker Fernando Forestieri had earlier cancelled out a firsthalf opener from Andre Ayew.

Swansea have also benefited from late winners at Leeds and Wigan this season and midfielder Byers believes they have shown an ability to compete to the final whistle.

“We had mixed emotions after the game (at Wednesday), Byers said. “We dominated the game and should have come away with three points really. After going 1-0 up, we were very comfortable and dominated most of the game.

“We could have dropped our heads after conceding twice, but we knew there was still time for us to play and potentially get something.

“This season, I think we’ve shown great resilience. With the quality within the team, we always know we can create a chance – no matter how long is left in the game.

“Luckily, we managed to get the goal at the end for the equaliser.”

Meanwhile, Ayew, 29, feels he and Swansea need to be more clinical in front of goal.

“We need to be hammering home our advantages and that’s something we’re going to work on,” he said.

“We should have been more clinical and conceding twice from set-pieces is always difficult to accept, but it’s part of the game. I’m pleased to score another goal, although, I would have liked to have made it a double.”
