CLOTET: WE NEED A KILLER INSTINCT UP FRONT

- By Scott Surridge

BIRMINGHAM City caretaker head coach Pep Clotet wants his goalshy players to take more of the chances they are creating to move the team up the table.

Clotet said that his team were creating lots of opportunities, but were failing to turn those chances into goals and points.

In the six Championship fixtures before the international break, Birmingham scored seven goals and picked up nine points from a possible 18.

Clotet said: “We have had an average of 18 shots per game for the past six games. We know the right route in football is to create as many chances as possible and eventually the goals will follow.

“Everyone is very confident about that and the spirit is good.

“We are in a really good position physically, which will give us a good boost as we know we are preparing the team well.

“There are a lot of games now until Christmas, we are starting the second of the three periods of the season.”

Clotet gave a positive assessment of his team’s start to the campaign.

He said: “For the first third of the league we would all agree we should have more points than what we have now. We know that, in the long run, this evens out.

“My evaluation of the first third is positive, mainly for one reason, because we saw a Birmingham side against Brentford in the first game of the season with a lot of doubt, with a lot of weaknesses and all of the players and staff have put in a massive effort to make sure that we can get as good as possible.

“We always had a massive belief that we can play the football that we are playing. This first third of the games I am happy that we have achieved a good level. In the next period we want to keep building and make sure that we get better.”
