Russell left fuming as Donny hit back late

- By Liam Hoden

RUSSELL Martin saw his wait for a first league win in charge of MK Dons go on after Doncaster Rovers held his side to a draw.

Cameron John netted a controversial late equaliser for Rovers after Alex Gilbey’s superb strike had fired Dons ahead early in the second half.

Despite seeing a much-needed win disappear, Martin declared himself proud of his players.

“I’m really proud of the players and how they’ve played,” Martin said.

“We came away from home against a good team that’s had some really good results and we’ve completely controlled the game. We dominated for most of the match.

“I thought they were excellent and I’m just disappointed that we couldn’t hold on for the victory.”

Martin was far from happy with Rovers’ equaliser.

“It’s a foul and I’ll be going to see the referee to show him,” he said. Lee (Nicholls, keeper) has brought it to his attention during the game at a previous corner and to ask the ref to watch it.

“The lad has rugby tackled Lee into the goal and they end up scoring, no one has seen it.”

Doncaster had enjoyed the better of the attacking play in what was an error-strewn contest at the Keepmoat.

Kieran Sadlier twice had goals ruled out for offside, before Gilbey scored a spectacular 52nd-minute opener for MK Dons from 20 yards.

The hosts, though, grabbed the equaliser in fortunate circumstances after 85 minutes.

A corner to the near post was blocked but the ball ricocheted in via John to draw Rovers level.

Doncaster boss Darren Moore felt the draw was a positive end to a difficult week after his side exited two cup competitions in the previous six days.

“We felt we had the better chances in the game,” he said. “We made a change at half-time to get us up the pitch and more time on the ball and make more of a game on it.

“But I’m really pleased. It’s our third game at the end of a tough week. To get the point always gives you something to work from.

“It keeps our own impressive home form going.

“I thought it was a never-say-die attitude from the players.

“We’ve ended the week with a positive.”
