Amene at double to give Alex high-five

- By Tom Harle

BREAKING the internet and climbing the table, Crewe chief David Artell couldn’t be happier with his chart-topping tyros after their dismantling of sorry Stevenage.

Chuma Amene’s double helped Alex establish a grip on the game and they never let go, a six-game unbeaten run sending them soaring to third.

The Cheshire men are now five points behind leaders Swindon with a game in hand.

“That second goal will make some great social media clips, it was terrific,” Artell said.

“I told the boys at half-time we should be four of five up already and that if we carried on getting those chances we had to put them away and we did that.

“I’m absolutely delighted for the lads. It was a great result.

“It was a fantastic performance. We should have been more clinical in the first half but we’ve finished with five goals and that’s a fantastic haul.

“We’re playing some amazing football at times and it’s a great start to a very busy period for us.”

Stevenage shipped two goals in three first-half minutes, with Amene’s closerange strike followed by Finney’s pearler, to set the tone for a miserable display.

Daniel Powell powered home the third just before the hour before Amene headed in a fourth.

Stevenage defender Scott Cuthbert scored an unwanted double in the closing stages, turning a Harry Pickering cross into his own net before adding a consolation at the right end.

The struggling hosts are now without a win in five games and defeat leaves them at the foot of the EFL, two points from safety.

Manager Mark Sampson didn’t hold back in his criticism of the side.

“They were far too good for us,” said Sampson.

“Straight away we have to apologise to every supporter who has made the effort at this time of year to come out and support their team.

“For us to produce a performance like that is unacceptable. From me personally I give them a huge apology, it’s not good enough.

“At this time of year we need to at least show some desire and fight to show we at least care about making our supporters happy.

“We haven’t shown that and there’s a huge apology to the supporters.”
