- By Tom Blackett

HULL City defender Angus MacDonald has been given the best Christmas present ever – the allclear after being treated for the early stages of bowel cancer.

The 27-year-old was diagnosed with the condition in August, but has completed successful treatment.

“It’s been a long couple of months but it’s a great time for me now,” he said.

“There were some dark stages but my friends, family, partner and everyone at the club helped me through it.

“I’m going to enjoy Christmas and then hopefully get back to working with the physios in the New Year.

“It’ll be nice to get back to doing what I love. You miss being around your team-mates.” Courage

His club, Hull, are also celebrating the good news.

In a statement, the Tigers said: “Hull City are delighted to announce the wonderful news that Angus MacDonald has been given the all-clear from bowel cancer.

“The 27-year-old was diagnosed with the early stages of bowel cancer in August but has now completed his treatment, which proved successful.

“Everyone at the club would like to express their happiness at this fantastic news.

“Angus has shown tremendous courage and strength of character during the most challenging of periods.

“We would like to wish him, his family and friends a wonderful Christmas and we all look forward to seeing Angus back in and around the club.”

MacDonald missed almost all of last season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in November 2018. Promising

The Winchester-born centre-half started his career with Reading and had several loan spells while on the Royals’ books.

He moved into NonLeague with Salisbury and Torquay, and began to carve out a reputation as a promising defender, earning England C honours in the process.

MacDonald moved to Championship club Barnsley in 2016 and then made the switch to Hull in January last year.

He previously suffered from a blood clot on the lung at the age of 15, but he has made a full recovery.
