TAYLOR’S HAPPY TO FIGHT FOR HIS PLACE...

- By Pete White

EXETER skipper Jake Taylor insists his battle for a starting berth at St James Park is testament to his side’s impressive run of form and one that he hopes will result in promotion from League Two.

The 28-year-old endured a three-match suspension following his sending off against Bradford in November and has struggled to reclaim a spot in the Grecians’ midfield since, largely due to the performances of Archie Collins and Nigel Atangana.

But while some captains might take their place in the team for granted, Taylor believes it’s important all members of Exeter’s squad play their part over a busy festive period to ultimately aid their quest of reaching the third tier for the first time since 201112.

And with only one defeat in ten ahead of this weekend’s games, he believes the short-term fortunes of his side could go a long way to determining their eventual league position in May.

“There are so many games coming up at the moment so it’s important the whole squad are ready when called upon,” he said.

“The boys that have been playing have been doing really well and winning games, and that’s the most important thing.

“I want everyone to be as successful as possible so if the boys are playing and winning then I am cheering them on from behind, and if I’m involved and winning then that is also a good thing.

“The other guys have been brilliant. Archie has come on leaps and bounds since last season and Nigel’s been fantastic since he came back in and returned to full fitness. Long may it continue.

“The Christmas period is very exciting.

“It’s a vital part of the season with so many games and so many points up for grabs.

“If you do well it often stands you in good stead going into the last part of the season, so hopefully we can do that.”
