We’ve got to attack it, says Evans

Lee Evans says the Latics will continue to go for the jugular - despite late bunders costing crucial points.

Paul Cook’s struggling side have taken the lead in each of their last SIX Championship matches, but failed to win a single one.

The most recent collapse came at home to relegation rivals Huddersfield last weekend, when a defensive lapse allowed Karlan Grant to level just nine minutes after the Terriers had fallen behind.

In fact, Wigan have scored the first goal in 50 per cent of their matches this season, the same amount as top-of-the-table West Brom.

Yet the Latics have registered just four victories all season and headed into the weekend second from bottom of the Championship.

Cook has called his players “naive” and demanded greater focus on defensive shape and discipline. Evans, though, says there must also be a place for attacking ambition.

“We got a little bit of stick for the Huddersfield goal at the weekend,” he said. “And yeah, we probably should have been in our shape better. “But it’s probably our way of wanting to push on and get the next goal. It’s trying to make sure we win the game rather than sit off and hold. “I know a lot of people don’t like to see their side sit back when they’ve gone 1-0 up, especially the way we’ve been going this season.

“And for us, it’s been nice to be leading and feel in the last half-hour that we could look to attack and go for the winner. It’s an old cliche, but attack is sometimes the best form of defence.”
