WHEELER: LET’S GET SHOW ON THE ROAD

- By Joe Leavey

DAVID Wheeler says that Wycombe have got to improve their fortunes on the road if they are to keep up their automatic promotion push.

The Chairboys sat top of the League One home table ahead of the weekend’s visit of Tranmere, but were down in 12th in the away equivalent, having won only four times on their travels this season.

And Wheeler believes that, if Gareth Ainsworth’s men are to reach the second tier for the first time in the club’s history, that is the place to start.

“We have been so dominant at home that it doesn’t stand out as much that we haven’t won many games away from home,” said the 29-year-old winger.

“If you win every game at home and lose every game away, at the end of the season you are still doing pretty well so I don’t think it has been a huge stress, but it was something that we needed to and wanted to correct.”

Wycombe were third, just a point off the top of the standings prior to yesterday’s game.

It seems that former QPR and Exeter man Wheeler has joined the party at the right time, as he continues his run in the team following a summer arrival from the Hoops – and he is enjoying every minute.

“Wycombe is definitely different to other clubs I’ve been at,” he continued.

“They do things in here in a different way to any club that I have been at before, and it is largely down to the influence of the gaffer (Gareth Ainsworth) and Dobbo (assistant manager Richard Dobson) with the way things are run in and around the changing room, the ground and the training ground.

“It is very well thought through and it is not just about what happens on the pitch; it is off the pitch too. It is a really interesting and exciting environment to be a part of.”
