HUSSEY: WE NEED WAYS TO DISRUPT THE BANK

- By Dan Haygarth

CHRIS Hussey says it is a compliment that opposition teams are trying to nullify his and Cheltenham’s threat – but they’ve got to find a way to overcome it.

The 31-year old left-back has enjoyed an impressive second season with the Robins as they battle for promotion, playing over 30 games in all competitions and being utilised as a wing-back.

Hussey boasts plenty of Football League experience, including playing under Chris Wilder at Sheffield United in addition to stints at Bury, Coventry and Wimbledon.

Since leaving South Yorkshire, he has thrived in Michael Duff’s system at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium, with Cheltenham looking much improved from last season’s 16thplace finish.

With the success has come tactical changes from opposition sides, but Hussey says that it is only a natural response to his side’s good form.

“Other teams are banking in – they are trying to make it difficult for us,” said Hussey, who signed a contract extension in October keeping him at the club until 2021.

“They’ve obviously watched the games where we’ve been dominant and they know we’re a good team so they’ve just banked in.

“They do try and lock my side down and that is a compliment within itself. Maybe they are putting two right-backs on the left-hand side, but it’s a compliment and we’ve got to find ways to beat it.

“I’ll try my best but it’s not about me – it’s about the other ten players on the pitch. If I don’t affect the game but we win, I’ll take that all day.

“We knew we had a good team and we believed because obviously last year we were on a strong run of form towards the end. It’s not a surprise.

“From the outside people may think little old Cheltenham will fade away but it is up to us to prove them wrong.”
