THE WAITING GAME GOES ON FOR CLUBS

EFL board prepare for vital midweek meeting

-

EFL clubs are set to find out in midweek what contingency plans the league have to finish the current campaign.

All games across the three divisions have been postponed until April 3 at the earliest due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, which has already claimed 21 lives in the UK.

There are already doubts as to whether football will be able to resume then and the EFL are weighing up their options.

The picture should become clearer when UEFA hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of postponing Euro 2020 by a year.

That could give some breathing space in the calendar to extend the EFL season if necessary.

The EFL board will meet in the middle of the week to discuss what could happen

next, while the Premier League are due to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday.

A number of suggestions have been floated by various parties over the last couple of days, including extending the season to get the remaining games played, making the campaign null and void or using the current standings to decide promotion and relegation.

In an ideal world, the EFL would prefer to finish the current season’s games. However, the situation is changing rapidly and nothing can be ruled out at this stage.

There has even been a suggestion that the Premier League could be expanded to 22 clubs, with current Championship top two Leeds and West Brom going up and no clubs being relegated from the top-flight.
