SAMMY’S STUNNER
Nottingham Forest’s Sammy Ameobi scoops goal prize
MR POPULAR: Nottingham Forest’s Sammy Ameobi gets a hug from Ryan Yates after scoring against Millwall and, Inset, with his prize
MAKING that little bit of extra effort paid off for Sammy Ameobi – and now it’s won him the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month award for January.
Winger Ameobi exchanged passes with Alex Mighten before curling home from the edge of the box. It was his second goal of the game and helped Nottingham Forest to a precious 3-1 victory against Millwall.
The 28-year-old said: “I was feeling quite tired at the time, to be honest! But I saw Alex coming in so I thought maybe I could get a one-two from him.
“I didn’t think I’d hit it first time, but he set it off so nicely that I just had to whip it and it flew in.”
Ameobi picked up 44 per cent of the public vote to beat off competition from Reading’s John Swift and Swansea’s Matt Grimes.
Stunning
In League One, Bristol Rovers midfielder Luke McCormick scooped the prize, claiming 43 per cent of the votes.
McCormick bent a stunning free-kick around the wall and into the top corner to give Crewe keeper Dave Richards no chance in his side’s 3-2 defeat. Chelsea loanee McCormick, 22, said: “I’m delighted to receive this award and I would like to thank all the Rovers fans who voted for me.
“The goal itself was a sweet strike and a technique that I often practise during training - so to see it come off during a game was pleasing!”
McCormick, right, edged out Swindon’s Scott Twine and Northampton’s Danny Rose.
In League Two,
Oldham winger Davis Keillor-Dunn held sway after curling home an exquisite stoppage time winner against Salford.
The 23-year-old said: “It was a nice, tidy, instinctive finish and with it being late on and the winner, it’s up there with one of my best efforts.
“It’s great to get an award like this and caps off a really good month. It’s up to me now, though, to keep performing consistently and look to keep adding goals to my game.”
With 43 per cent, he held off Cambridge’s Jack Iredale and Scunthorpe’s Alfie Beestin.
