A KEEN golfer swung into action as she raised cash for a Renfrewshire charity in memory of her grandmother.

As Lady Captain of Ranfurly Castle Golf Club, in Bridge of Weir, Karen Binning was able to choose a worthy cause for members to support during her tenure.

She opted for Quarriers, which is also based in the village and is close to her heart due to family ties.

Quarriers was once a home for orphaned and destitute children but is now one of Scotland’s largest social care providers.

Karen’s grandmother – aged only six at the time – was admitted to the children’s home, along with her two brothers, after their dad tragically died from typhoid and their mum had to undergo surgery, so was unable to look after them.

The children stayed there for five years until 1915, when their mum remarried.

Karen and other relatives decided to contact staff at Quarriers and were able to find out more information about their ancestors’ time there, including when they arrived, which cottages they stayed in and when they left.

“I wanted to raise money for Quarriers as my dad was so fascinated by the whole story,” Karen said.

“He had never mentioned this story until we moved from the east coast to Bridge of Weir and he found out that Quarriers Village was so close by.”

The golf club coined in £835 for the charity through a series of fundraising events, such as a Tri-Am tournament, a bridge afternoon and a raffle at its annual dinner.

Louise Strachan, events and community fundraiser at Quarriers, told The Gazette: “We are very grateful to Karen for choosing Quarriers as her preferred charity during her time as Lady Captain and to everyone who supported her.

“This fantastic donation will allow us to continue providing care and support to those who need it most.”
