Councillor hits out over ‘visibly tired’ leisure hub

-

CHILDREN at Howwood Primary have gone to great lengths to show their support for a worthy cause.

Inspired by the fundraising efforts of primary six pupil Abigail Jackson, the youngsters took part in the ‘penny mile challenge.’

This saw them heading to the playground, where around 40,000 coins collected by Abigail from local residents were laid out in a huge line.

The money is being donated to St Vincent’s Hospice, which is also based in Howwood and has previously been supported by Abigail through the likes of a sponsored challenge which involved her completing 100 laps of the playground.

Shirley Ormond, headteacher at Howwood Primary, said: “Our school motto is ‘creating great citizens’ and that’s what we try to achieve by doing projects like this.

“The hospice is close to everyone’s hearts. Most local communities have had loved ones supported there at some point, so things like this are really important.

“In the school, we have hosted a number of events to support the hospice and will continue to do so.

“The best thing was this brought the whole village together and they had good fun. The children have had a great time and it’s all for a good cause.” that have raised issues with me, I want to raise the general point for this report that this is a centre in need of significant TLC in some places inside and there’s nothing in this business plan.”

Laura McIntyre, the council’s head of policy and partnerships, said more detail around operational and property matters was often included in discussions at OneRen board meetings.

“I’m happy to take some of those points back into the quarterly monitoring meetings that I have,” she added.

Dr Victoria Hollows, chief executive of OneRen, said: “In terms of the interior of the On-X, I think there is already a response on its way back to you Councillor Ann-Dowling, in terms of some of the phasing of that work that has had to be phased in a particular way to minimise disruption to customers while they are still using that facility.

“But again, of course we can pick up with our colleagues and partners in the council about how we manage and phase that.”
