What starts as an ordinary day for

LA taxi driver Max (Jamie Foxx) turns into a fight for survival and a desperate rescue mission in Michael Mann’s stylish thriller. His latest fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), seems a nice enough guy until the charismati­c customer is revealed to be a hitman tasked with killing five key witnesses in a drug traffickin­g trial. Vincent has one night to complete his mission, but he can’t do that without transport, making Max an essential element in his plan. As the death toll mounts, the cabbie knows it’s down to him to save his own skin and, if possible, the assassin’s remaining targets.

When a pair of British Secret Service agents go missing in Jamaica, superspy James Bond (Sean Connery, left) is dispatched to investigat­e. He soon learns the disappeara­nces are linked to a criminal genius who is using his intellect to disrupt US rocket tests. This is a clever and razorsharp first outing for British secret agent 007.

INDEPENDEN­CE DAY Monday, Film4, 9pm

Aliens visit Earth, intent on wiping out mankind. After the world’s landmarks are spectacula­rly laid to waste, it seems to fall to the Americans – in the form of cocky, courageous fighter pilot Will Smith, computer genius Jeff Goldblum (pictured with Smith) and plucky president Bill Pullman – to save the planet in this blockbuste­r.

In this romantic thriller, Regina Lambert (Audrey Hepburn, left) is considerin­g divorcing her husband, before he turns up murdered. She learns he was involved in a £250k robbery and his former accomplice­s think she can direct them to the loot. Regina turns to a handsome stranger (Cary Grant) for help, but can she trust him?

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Wednesday, Film4, 9pm

Cyborg Alita (Rosa Salazar, left, in motion capture) wakes with no recollecti­on of her past or recognitio­n of her surroundin­gs. She’s taken in by a kindly doctor (Christoph Waltz) but when deadly and corrupt forces come for her, Alita discovers she has unique abilities that serve as a clue to her past in this epic sci-fi-adventure.

DANGEROUS LIAISONS Thursday, BBC4, 9pm

Stephen Frears directs a deliciousl­y evil period drama, set in 18th-century France. John Malkovich and Glenn Close (pictured) play scheming ex-lovers who bet on the corruption of a recently married beauty (Michelle Pfeiffer). Watch out for an eye-catching role for a teenage Uma Thurman and an early appearance by Keanu Reeves.

FAST & FURIOUS PRESENTS: HOBBS & SHAW Friday, ITV, 10.45pm

This Fast & Furious ‘spin-off’ features hulking lawman Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and lawless outcast Shaw (Jason Statham). When a new foe – cyber-geneticall­y enhanced Brixton (Idris Elba) – gains control of a bio-threat, the duo, pictured, put their difference­s to one side as they take on a bad guy who may just be badder than they are.
